Schedule for Preventative Health Care
The incidence of infectious diseases in cats has been reduced significantly through the use of vaccines. Other preventative measures, including dental care and laboratory testing, can help increase the life span and improve the quality of life of your cat. The following is a chart of recommended procedures for kitten and adult cats to prevent disease throughout their life.
3 - 5 weeks Fecal exams for parasites and deworming
8 - 10 weeks Physical exam Panleukopenia (distemper)/ upper respiratory infection vaccine Feline leukemia/immunodeficiency virus test
10 - 12 weeks Feline leukemia virus vaccine (outdoor only)
12 - 14 weeks Physical exam Panleukopenia (distemper)/ upper respiratory infection vaccine Rabies vaccine Fecal exam
14 - 16 weeks Feline leukemia virus vaccine (outdoor only) Begin home dental care
6 months Spay or neuter Insert microchip
All cats should receive the following services on an annual basis: Physical exam Panleukopenia (distemper)/ upper respiratory infection vaccine Rabies vaccine Feline leukemia virus vaccine (outdoor only)
Cats allowed outdoors or in contact with other cats should receive the following additional services on an annual basis: Feline leukemia/immunodeficiency virus test Fecal exam
In additional, cats should receive regular professional dental care, as determined by the physical exam. For cats over eight years of age, laboratory testing and radiographs are added for early detection of age-related diseases.
